Letter to New York City

RICHARD DIEBENKORN, GIRL LOOKING AT LANDSCAPE, 1975. COURTESY OF THE WHITNEY MUSEUM.

Dear New York City,

My name is L.  I'm 44 years old.

New York.

I don't know how to tell you this, but I'm too ordinary for you.

I'm faded blue jeans. I'm an old yellow t-shirt with holes. I'm a $3.99 dozen of flowers at the farmer's market. I'm monosyllabic. I prefer the Guggenheim without any walls. Routine is my mint tea.

You are too beautiful for me. You are an expensive red lipstick. You are black high heels. Polysyllabic. Intelligent. Tolerant. You speak beautiful poems at 2:00 a.m.

New York, you are my Tonio Kroger.

I will not die to everyday life for you.

Kisses,

L.

p.s. We will always have the Chelsea District

  1. Dear L.

    I'am old.
You are not ordinary. You, nothing else.
Indians, Dutchmen, English, American and Italian left their mark on me over the years... But was admitted in NY, just for a minute, remember me all your life.
    Not be your Tonio Kroger.
Take quiet your mint tea ...
    I've been through your life.
There will kill your daily life.

    Kisses,
    NYC

PS. You lived in the Chelsea district ... for University?

  3. Mr. Crónicas

Thank you for your answer. New York was beautiful, but I didn't feel at home in the concrete jungle. I'm rural at heart. For a long time I thought being rural was a disease. But this trip to NYC helped feel comfortable in the geography of my heart.

What a lovely visit. It is nice to see you here. I like writing letters. I hope to write one to Spain one day.
